Lessons From Rome

Writer: Tiffany AgnewTiffany Agnew

My journey to completing my late son Braedon's as well as my own bucket list (AKA my brave list) recently took me over the Atlantic Ocean for the second time in the last six months.

I walked down city streets covered in uneven cobblestone thousands of years older than the country I live in. I stood in awe, completely mesmerized by the breathtaking works of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel.

The riveting symbolism hidden in the masterpiece he brought to life over 500 years ago awakened parts of me that had been dormant for far too long. That stir in my soul made me appreciate art and history in a way I never have before.

I stood on the arena floor of the Colosseum that was built almost two thousand years ago yet still remains the largest amphitheater in the history of the world. This breathtaking, marvellous beauty stands 157 meters tall (about 14 and a half stories), is as wide as a football field and is over twice as long.

Its architectural sophistication & innovation has stood the test of time making it one of the most preserved pieces of the era & one of the seven wonders of the world.

Goosebumps crawled up my arms as I thought of how different life looked back in 80 AD. And an eerie feeling washed over me as I realized that at just 42 I would have already surpassed the average life expectancy by 12 years.

As we made our way through listening to wild & unbelievable stories of the times I couldn't help but think of all the genius, awe, astonishment, wonderment. And even more so all the pain, anguish, and suffering the walls around me had witnessed in the centuries before. Yet there they remained, still standing tall.

It was in those streets, in the many works of art & astonishing pieces of history that transcended time that my mind was stretched & I was reminded that we are each born into this world capable of feats beyond our wildest imaginations.

Inside each of us lies the ability to shake, shape and even change the world in our own unique way and more than ever we need to connect with that inherent power inside of us more than ever.

As kids that spark we're born with is encouraged and parents and teachers tell us that we can do anything. As we get older though those we love most stop fanning our flames.

“You can do anything”, gets replaced with, “that’s not very realistic and I mean what are the chances?”

If we look around though it’s easy to see that this way of thinking isn’t serving us. So many talented people are struggling and slowly dying in the empty "safe" lives they've created.

Walking around Rome made me want to get back to the awe and wonder of life. It made me want to shut of the noise of the word and listen to where my own intuition is pulling me.

Let’s do it together.

  • Let's lean into the things that pull on our heartstrings and get us excited to wake up in the morning.

  • Let’s get curious about how we want to shape the world and the kind of legacy we want to live.

  • Let's ask ourselves the important questions.

What’s something that's been pulling on your heart?
